Black, Sykes Capture Spring Awards L-R: Martinique Sykes, Jared Black PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF men’s cross country team concluded its spring season of competition with award winners. Jared Black was the distance award winner with consistently strong 5000 meter performances, while Martinique Sykes captured the mid-distance honors, with impressive 800 meter and 1500 meter races. The Argonauts competed in the FSU Relays, the War Eagle Invitational at Auburn, the South Alabama Invitational, and the North Florida Spring Break Invitational during the spring season.Junior Jared Black (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon HS) turned in two sub-16 minute performances in the 5000, including a 15:53 at the Elite War Eagle Invitational meet in Auburn and a season best of 15:29 at the North Florida Spring Break invitational, which was good enough for ninth place overall out of 43 runners. Black also turned in a 4:27 performance in the 1500 at South Alabama.Sophomore Martinique Sykes (Orange Park, Fla./Orange Park HS) started the spring by having to pull out of the North Florida Invitational races due to injury, but he recovered well and turned in two sub -four minute performances in the 1500. His top performance was a 3:57.25 in the 1500 at the talent-loaded Auburn meet. His time placed him eighth of 26 athletes. Sykes was the overall winner in the South Alabama Invitational 1500 with a time of 4:02.5 in the afternoon heat, and he followed that up with a second place finish in the 800 in a season-best time of 1:55.01Sykes also performed very well at the FSU Relays, posting times of 4:00.54 in the 1500 meters and a 1:57.09 in the 800 meters. Twin brother Dominique Sykes (Orange Park, Fla./Orange Park HS) turned in his best race of the year at the FSU Relays by posting a 1:56.46 time in the 800. Dominique also had the team’s top 400 meter race with a time of 52.36 at the North Florida Invitational.Freshman Ben Jernigan (Gainesville, Fla./P.K. Yonge HS) turned in two solid 800 meter races, with a 2:03.52 at the North Florida Invitational and a 2:04.32 at the FSU Relays. Jernigan also posted a 4:20.09 in the 1500 at the North Florida Spring Break Invitational.Freshman Titus Cheruiyot (Eldoret, Kenya/Tenwek HS) raced in the 1500 and the 5000 during the spring. His top race was a third place overall finish in the South Alabama 1500 in a time of 4:17.43. Cheruiyot posted a 16:41 at the Auburn 5000 meter event, and a 16:46 at the FSU Relays 5000 meters. Meanwhile, Freshman Seth Rosonina (Mims, Fla./Astronaut HS) posted the top 5000 meter time for the Argonauts this spring with a 15:14 performance at the North Florida Invitational.The Argonauts will be returning six members of last fall’s cross country squad that finished second in the Gulf South Conference and fourth at the NCAA South Regional. The Argonauts will be preparing for the 2011 fall cross country season, with practice beginning on August 15 and events beginning in September. The 2009 money leader has won seven times on the JGTO Tour, but never in a major championship.Also one shot behind were Hiroyuki Fujita, Kiyoshi Miyazato and Michio Matsumura.
