first_img Share FeaturedLocalNews Research Project Underway for Telecommunications Sector in Dominica by: – August 12, 2020 Share Research is currently being done in the area of telecommunications in Dominica and how it has been affected by hurricane maria.Arnelle Isaac is a Dominican student at the University of Portsmouth, England, pursuing a Masters in crisis and disaster management.Isaac identified a need within the region to understand ‘how to build back better and how to avoid or be more resilient to both man-made and natural disasters.’Arnelle Isaac BSc.Currently she is working on her dissertation. “The focus for my research project is the telecommunication sector in Dominica and how Hurricane Maria has affected this sector and how we are building back after Hurricane Maria,” she said.She went on to explain some of the responses that she received from questionnaires with the public.“The majority of the recommendations that were made were dealing with running of an underground network, so that we can avoid basically having any wind damage to poles and so forth which was a major issue post maria.”Isaac identified this area of research after being off island during the passage of Maria and experiencing the loss of communication with the island after the storm.She said hopes to share whatever knowledge she gains from her research with ‘the relevant authorities’ in an attempt to ‘effect some change or present some recommendation’ to help the sector be more resilient.According to her, she is also focusing her responses on interviews with telecommunication companies.“So, my research is part interviews with professionals in the various companies as well as questionnaire with the general public,” She explained.“So, what I really want to do is put the two together and compare the response and get a general idea of what’s really going on in this sector in Dominica,” Isaac told DA Vibes. 1021 Views   no discussionscenter_img Sharing is caring!
