Blake Sims will reportedly take the first snap for the No. 2-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide this season.CBS Sports has learned that the fifth-year senior will start Saturday’s season opener against West Virginia at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The 6-foot, 208-pound Sims played behind AJ McCarron for three years after being redshirted his first year in 2010.Alabama coach Nick Saban has yet to make a public announcement that Sims will start. He took issue to a question Wednesday about Sims by saying, “Nobody ever said he wasn’t going to start the game.” Florida State transfer Jacob Coker is expected to play as well Saturday. Sims had taken a slight lead after the second scrimmage of camp because he had a better understanding of the offense than Coker, a Mobile native who had to graduate from Florida State in the spring to be immediately eligible to play this year.A Gainesville, Ga, native, Sims is considered a dual-threat quarterback while 6-5, 230-pound Coker is a pocket passer. In 2011, Saban played McCarron and Phillip Sims in the season opener, but went with McCarron for the entire game the following week at Penn State. McCarron proceeded to win back-to-back national championships in 2011 and 2012 for the Crimson Tide.
