The game started ugly for the Fighting Irish, but safety Alohi Gilman wasn’t going to leave Los Angeles without a win.Gilman, who transferred to the team from rival Navy last year, has emerged as a playmaker in the defensive backfield for the Fighting Irish. He finished the regular season second on the team in tackles (76), with three tackles for loss, a pair of interceptions in the Week 12 win over Syracuse, and two forced fumbles. He is apparently a vocal leader for the team as well.At halftime, with Notre Dame football down 10-7 to the rival USC Trojans, Alohi Gilman gave the team a fiery pump-up speech in the locker room.Evidently it worked. Notre Dame came back to win 24-17 to clinch the 12-0 season.Alohi Gilman halftime speech pic.twitter.com/7EMDFFMlAt— Jac Collinsworth (@JacCollinsworth) November 27, 2018Gilman recorded 10 total tackles and forced a fumble against the Trojans. He will be a senior next season, but does have two years of eligibility remaining. Expect to see plenty more of him over the next few years, if Brian Kelly’s program continues to thrive.Notre Dame is off this week, and has to hope that the College Football Playoff selection committee respects the undefeated record, as they won’t have the data point of a conference championship, like Ohio State and Oklahoma could. Fighting Irish fans should feel pretty good about their chances though.last_img
